Live Feedback

If you want to know, if the audience is following your lecture, you should use the Feedback-Function from ARSnova: with the use of “Smileys”, the listeners can indicate their pace of learning and understanding of the lecture or pose questions, without interrupting the class. Of course, it is not advisable to constantly follow the live feedback. It is best to ask the audience for feedback either before a lecture break or at the end of the lecture. This will help the students to remain attentive, non-distracted and the feedback will be focused and properly reflect and represent the lecture at hand.

Live Assessment

ARSnova implements a formative assessment: you’ll find out more quickly, where your students are having difficulties and can respond accordingly during the lecture. Also, the students can see their actual level of understanding in comparison to that of their fellow students. The current level of understanding is calculated as a percentage value of the questions which were answered correctly or alternatively on the basis of the most possible answers achieved. Also, you can separately assess the current level of understanding according to the prep-questions and questions posed from the audience.

Innovative Types of Questions

ARSnova offers classic forms of questions: multiple and single choice, yes or no, Likert and Note scales, free texts, flashcards and innovative questions such as screen based pictured questions for marking images and MINT diagrams. You can also distribute virtual sticky dots for queries, which is a technique based on the Method of Moderation. Each format has an option for abstention because an answer not known, is also an answer and is relevant for determining the level of understanding. You can provide each question with instructions on how it should be handled and answered.

Peer Instruction

ARSnova makes it possible to meet the demands of constructive teaching principles: less teacher-centered teaching, more small group work, learning through (peer-mediated) teaching. With the proven teaching method “Peer Instruction” from Eric Mazur,  you can encourage active learning whether it be in the seminar room or in the lecture hall. Students sitting close to one another, argue over posed questions and try to convince their peers about the accuracy of their solution. ARSnova supports you in the logistics of this method with a timed two-round voting system.

Inverted Classroom

Change the approach of your lecture: With the learning strategy “Inverted Classroom” pure knowledge is relocated from the lecture hall to the personal place of study. To assure understanding of what is being taught, short explanatory videos and accompanying questions should be provided for home usage. Here is an example  for the use of videos during the preparatory phase. Everything from the current learning progress, to the homework and questions of the students, will let you know if you should adjust the content of your next lecture: “Just-in-Time Teaching”.

One more thing…

Are you a lecturer at a college or a trainer in the further education sector? ARSnova adapts like a chameleon: it is up to you, how and why you use it. With one single click, the main functions can be configured to different application scenarios (Clicker, Evaluation, Live Feedback, Flashcards), either directly (during a lecture) or afterwards. All buttons and labels can also be renamed. Just as we have implemented the English interface of ARSnova, you can also reconfigure it to fit your needs, without the use of Programming, by using search and replace in this file. Otherwise, simply leave your changes along with your design adjustments for us to do: TransMIT.

ARSnova in 7 Minutes

The functional diversity of our Audience Response System is the result of three years of research and development (OpenHub estimates 18 years) and numerous evaluations. 7 minutes is really not enough time for demonstrating all of the features, but the most important is shown in the screencast. Thanks to several usability tests, the learning curve is proceeding at an increasing rate; therefore, no training will be needed for you and your students: learning by doing.

I find this system to be fantastic and am trying to convince my university (resp. our IT-Technicians) to install it on our server, and many, many thanks for this wonderful opportunity; for bringing a bit of digital interactivity in the poorly equipped everyday university life.
